Moosend Review Summary

Our Rating:

  • Moosend is an email marketing app.
  • It has drag & drop page builders to build newsletters, forms and landing pages for creating email campaigns.
  • There are templates for newsletters, landing pages, forms and automations.
  • Forms can be embeded to websites as inline, popups, floating bars, etc.
  • You can tag and segment leads and customers and create automations.
  • With the Free lifetime plan you can have 1000 subscribers.
  • Your emails will not have their branding.

A few years back I was searching for a good email autoresponder for my blog. I tried Mailchimp, GetResponse, Mailerlite, ActiveCampaign, and Moosend.

I wanted one which allowed maximum subscribers and had the lowest price. I settled with Moosend in the end.

This Moosend review will tell you why.

But before I tell you about what I found about Moosend, let me give you a short primer on what is email marketing and why we need an email marketing app.

Why do we need an email marketing app?

So, why do we need an email marketing app, if we can write emails with any email app or service?

Well, if you use an email app such as Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, etc., they do not allow you to use your company name in your email address.

If you use such a generic email app, you will have an email address like [email protected] or [email protected], etc.

That doesn’t look very professional, does it?

But, if you use an email marketing app, you can have email addresses as [email protected]

This not only looks professional but creates a sense of trust in the mind of the recipients.

But, having a professional email address is just one of the benefits of having an email marketing app. There are other benefits too, such as –

  • You can send bulk emails automatically.
  • You can send newsletters automatically.
  • You can collect leads using email forms.
  • You can tag the leads.
  • You can build different lists based on leads or customer’s actions.
  • You can send different emails to different lists automatically.
  • You can send emails based on your leads actions.
  • You can send transactional emails.
  • You can create an email sequence, based on the actions, to convert leads into customers.
  • You can build email templates.
  • You can do A/B split tests.
  • You can get reports like opens, clicks, bounce rates, devices, etc.

The only thing you cannot do is receive emails.

For that, you need to have a separate email app that hosts your email inbox.

You can either get your email inbox with the hosting service you use to host your website or you can host it somewhere else.

So, we need an email marketing app to get leads and convert them into customers. We can also send transactional emails through an email marketing app.

An email marketing app is actually indispensable for any business.

What is Moosend?

Moosend is an email marketing app.

With Moosend you can –

  • Create email pages by a drag & drop page builder.
  • Send one-time emails to communicate with your leads and customers.
  • Send newsletters automatically.
  • Collect leads through Subscription Forms and Landing Pages.
  • Create different lists.
  • Send different emails to different lists and segments.
  • Create automation rules to send emails based on subscriber activity.
  • Get reports like emails sent, emails opened, links clicked, locations, etc.

The company was founded in 2012. It was acquired by Sitecore in 2021.

Sitecore is a software company based in San Francisco, California. It has offices worldwide including Australia, Sweden, Japan, Canada, Germany, Singapore, France, Belgium, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Middle East, India, etc.

Moosend has an impressive client list such as WWF, Dominoes, Ogilvy, Vogue, TedX, Fox, SAP, GQ, Gucci, etc.

But what about their deliverability rate?

Does Moosend have a good deliverability rate?

The main concern that one should have before using an email marketing app is deliverability.

If your bulk emails land in the spam folders of your recipients, then there is no use in sending emails, right?

So, how does Moosend handles this issue?

Well, for an email marketing app, it is important that their IPs are not blacklisted by the spam filters. They do an exercise at the beginning called “warm-up” which builds the reputation of their IPs with the spam filters.

And then they maintain that reputation by implementing strict rules against spamming which the users of their service have to follow.

They also encourage their users to follow the best practices which will increase the reputation of their IPs.

For a start, I looked into Moosend’s Anti-Spam policy. Moosend seemed to have the usual rules that are required to maintain a healthy IP reputation.

Next, I looked at some of the case studies done by third parties.

The EmailDeliverabilityReport website had some interesting stats. Their experiments showed Moosend to have an 87% success rate of your emails not landing in the spam or junk folders.

email marketing app case studies
Fig.1 Email marketing app case studies

They are behind ActiveCampaign, GetResponse, Klick-Tipp, and Mailjet, all of which has 90% success rates. CleverReach, CampaignMonitor, Hubspot and RapidMail have success rates between 88% and 89%.

Moosend deliverability rates were the same as Aweber, Mailchimp, Mailify and ConvertKit.

They are better than Sendinblue, MailerLite, ConstantContact and others.

Sender Score, a reputed agency for coming out with reports on email deliverability, has given a 98% deliverability rate for Moosend.

EmailToolTester has given Moosend a score of 88.7%.

Actually, email deliverability is a result of many factors.

Although it differs from one email marketing service to another, it also depends a lot on the senders themselves.

Beside Server/IP reputation and domain reputation, email deliverability also depends on the Sender Reputation and Email Engagement metrics.

Configuring SPF/DKIM is also a very important factor for email deliverability.

So the responsibility of having higher email deliverability lies both on the email service company as well as on the senders themselves.

I found Moosend to be doing its part in maintaining the reputation of their IPs.

They are also actively educating their users on how to follow the best practices through their articles and videos.

Moosend features

Moosend has almost all the standard email marketing features that an email marketing app should have.

There are 12 form templates to build your forms.

The landing page builder is more or the same as the campaign builder. You can drag & drop blocks and elements on the canvas to create a landing page from scratch or use one of the templates.

You can also add Facebook pixels, Google Analytics pixels, custom fonts, javascript, etc. on the landing page.

You can set up a mailing list in Moosend to collect details of your leads like name, email, address, mobile, etc.

You can view the members in your lists, delete members, add members, etc.

You can also create segments to put your leads into a mailing list according to the actions they have performed on your website or in the emails you have sent to them.

Segments are basically like tags, which you use to tag a lead and create groups or segments.

For example, you can set a condition that if someone has viewed a product for X number of times, then segment that person into a separate mailing list called “Interested”.

4. Automation

You can create automation from scratch or pick one from the Automation Recipes or pre-made automation.

There are 18 Automation Recipes at the moment like abandoned cart, happy birthday, join the newsletter, onboarding email sequence, retargeting email based on weather, special offer reminder, etc.

Is Moosend good?

When I was looking for a good email marketing app for my blog, I looked at Mailchimp, GetResponse, Mailerlite, ActiveCampaign, and Moosend.

I was not familiar with Moosend, but I knew the names of the others.

Email deliverability and a Free plan were priorities for me.

There was no Free plan in GetResponse and ActiveCampaign. So I had to choose between Moosend, Mailchimp, and Mailerlite.

Here is what I found:

Moosend Mailchimp Mailerlite
Free Subscribers 1000 2000 1000
Unlimited Campaigns 10000/month
Unlimited Forms
Templates Basic Landing Pages only
Automation Single-Step
Tracking
Reports Basic
A/B Split Tests
Integrations
API
Remove Logo
Transactional Emails
Landing Pages
SMTP
Custom Domains
Email/Chat Support First 30 days only Email only

As you can see that it was a close call between Moosend and Mailerlite.

Mailchimp, the “grand old daddy” among email marketing apps was nowhere near to Moosend and Mailerlite in terms of the features. The only good thing about them is their 2000 subscriber count in the Free plan.

I also found another email marketing app called Sender.net.

I was attracted by the very generous 2000 subscriber limit in their Free plan.

However, Sender.net did not deliver my emails to many inboxes like Outlook, AOL, and Yahoo. So I never used it.

I had to choose one winner in the end.

I chose Moosend mainly because of two reasons, which are –

  • Moosend’s deliverability rate was better than Mailerlite.
  • Moosend doesn’t put their branding in the emails in the Free plan.

Here is the Moosend pros & cons from my experience on using it.

PROS

  • Great email deliverability rate.
  • 1000 Free subscribers
  • Almost all features available in the Free plan
  • No logo branding.
  • Lots of email templates
  • Many types of subscription forms
  • Many automation recipes
  • A/B split tests
  • Customer tracking and reports
  • Both email and chat support

CONS

  • No landing pages
  • No custom domains

How’s the support?

I have used their chat support and found it to be satisfactory.

But the chat support is not 24X7.

I have also used their email support.

They usually reply within 2 days on average.

The Moosend alternatives

Mailerlite is the only good alternative to Moosend.

But as I wrote above, you have to compromise with them putting their logo on your emails.

The only good thing I found about them, compared to Moosend is that they have landing pages in their Free plan.

But I do not really care about landing pages.

They also do not have email templates, A/B Split tests, and chat support.

But, if you do not care about these you can go with them.

What was my strategy for using Moosend?

Here is the strategy which I had when I chose Moosend.

Should you sign up directly at their website?

Never sign up directly at their website or else you may miss good offers from their affiliates.

Should you sign up through my affiliate link?

I always give useful bonuses to all my readers.

It is my way of saying thanks for signing up through my affiliate link.

Here are the goodies you get when you sign up for Moosend through me.

Conclusion

Moosend has been my go-to email automation app for the last 3 years.

I saw it being developed and grow to a professional brand.

But what amazed me is that the company always was eager to help me whenever I needed it.

That’s my personal experience.

I have also found Moosend to be growing their knowledge base constantly. I could now find articles and videos for things that I wanted to learn, which were not there before.

So, I think that Moosend is a well-managed company. And now that they have been acquired by Sitecore, they will up the game.

They already have a killer USP in that, they do not brand emails with their logos in the Free plan.

It’s a huge thing to have in a Free plan.

In fact, I have not seen any other company do that in their Free plan.

Combined, with the 1000 subscribers allowance, Moosend has definitely created a stir in the email marketing space.

I would definitely earn a small commission if you upgrade to one of their paid plans, but I am not writing this article for the sake of promotion only.

I was just another marketer like you, who was searching for a good Free email marketing app not too long ago.

I found Moosend. It ticked all the right spots. And I loved working with it.

I am sure you won’t go wrong if you do the same.
